Once considered rare, autistic spectrum disorders are now more common than childhood cancer, pediatric AIDS and juvenile diabetes combined.

In 2005, the Department of Developmental Services (DDS) initiated a statewide project to create a document that would provide all individuals with an interest in the field of autistic spectrum disorders access to comprehensive, relevant, and current information about therapeutic interventions for individuals with ASD.

Autistic Spectrum Disorders: Guidelines for Effective Interventions addresses the complex needs of persons affected by autistic spectrum disorders (ASD), including the parents and family members, and the professionals assisting persons with ASD. Research and extensive clinical experience demonstrate that early diagnosis and appropriate therapeutic intervention can make significant impacts for people with ASD and help maximize their potential.

A wealth of information regarding therapeutic and educational interventions continues garnering much attention and publicity. As a result, choosing a therapeutic intervention that is likely to be beneficial for a child or adult with ASD can be a difficult and overwhelming decision.

This document is a critical step toward addressing the need for increased understanding of evidence-based interventions and serves to inform clinical training, practice and research. It is intended to serve as a tool to assist families, children and adults with ASD, educators, medical and health practitioners, and other involved professionals make informed decisions in selecting and/or recommending intervention options for individuals with ASD, in an effort to enchance their lives and the lives around them.
